Product Description: This Luftwaffe Airfield Workers Badge is a rare piece, seldom offered for sale. It’s a high-quality badge, with nearly all of the original bronze finish still intact. The center of this eye-catching badge features an early type “droop tail” Luftwaffe flying eagle and swastika emblem, which is nicely detailed. Around this emblem is the wording “Fl. H. Kdtr. Münster-Loddenheide” indicating issue by the Fliegerhorstkommandantur (air field command) in Münster-Loddenheide. The number “998,” the individual control number for this badge, is stamped at the bottom. On the reverse, this rare Airfield Workers Badge is flat and smooth, with the stamped maker mark of the firm of Lehmann und Wunderberg in Hannover. The brass alloy attachment pin assembly is complete and is functional. It is held in place with a pin plate which is also maker marked. This badge is very well preserved, with some traces of wear, scattered tiny marks and a small bit of verdigris. It would be hard to upgrade and remains in excellent condition.
Historical Description: The extreme manpower demands faced by Germany in the Second World War required the participation of a wide range of auxiliary personnel including civilian workers as well as members of political and paramilitary organizations. These Wehrmacht auxiliaries served in a vast variety of functions, from the secretaries working in recruiting headquarters to the Hitlerjugend members manning Flak cannons- sometimes even at the front lines. They arranged rail and road transport, tended to war wounded, provided police and security duties, and helped with building everything from roads to bunkers and anti-tank obstacles. Some Wehrmacht auxiliary formations were assigned special uniforms, some wore the uniforms of their respective organizations with or without special badges and insignia, and some showed up for work in their civilian clothing. Some of these formations existed on a large scale while others were small and existed only for a limited time. Wehrmacht auxiliaries and civilian workers are an interesting facet of the armed forces of WWII Germany.
