Product Description: This Grand Cross Postcard is a great-looking piece with eye-catching color. This original propaganda postcard depicts the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross in a detailed color illustration on a bright orange background, with the German designation for this award (Grosskreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes) in white capital letters below. The image is nicely centered and shows light surface and edge wear with some tiny creases that don’t detract from the eye appeal. On the reverse, this Grand Cross Postcard is blank, and this has never been mailed. Printed text identifies this card as number 6 in the series “War Orders of the Greater German Reich.” The name of the artist as well as the publisher of the postcard, both in Hamburg, are printed. There is a price marking of “10 Rpf.” which is more than it would have cost to mail this in Germany at the time. This scarce and attractive postcard rates as excellent.
Historical Description: In its ten years of existence, the German Wehrmacht produced a massive amount of printed material of all kinds, from books that could fill a library to pamphlets and forms. A wide range of different instructional materials were printed, detailing topics that varied from regulations on barracks life to hyper-specific training on individual pieces of military equipment. Manuals explained the correct use of every kind of weapon, and vehicle, and were made for a vast array of individual duties and roles. Some books were made available for purchase, and others were distributed to troops for their education or entertainment. Still others were kept at unit level- these included the volumes that were printed with specific regulations on various topics. The wartime Wehrmacht books, booklets, pamphlets and leaflets that survive to this day are a rich source of historical information that can inform us about the Second World War.
