Product Description: This attractive original Fallschirmjäger Postcard is from a series that reproduced portraits by Wolfgang Willrich, depicting members of various branches of the German military. This one depicts a Fallschirmjäger, Feldwebel Urpte, an NCO who won the Knights Cross for securing bridges in France with his group in 1940. Urpte is shown in a full color portrait, wearing a green jump smock and holding his MP40 submachine gun. His face has a determined expression and his head is covered with a camouflaged jump helmet. Willrich’s signature monogram and the date 1940 are printed on the card. The reverse of this card is printed with the emblem of the VDA organization, with text that relates this to a VDA charity drive in February 1942. This card has never been mailed. There is no damage to note, just slight wear and typical age toning and foxing. This Fallschirmjäger Postcard rates as excellent.
Historical Description: In its ten years of existence, the German Wehrmacht produced a massive amount of printed material of all kinds, from books that could fill a library to pamphlets and forms. A wide range of different instructional materials were printed, detailing topics that varied from regulations on barracks life to hyper-specific training on individual pieces of military equipment. Manuals explained the correct use of every kind of weapon, and vehicle, and were made for a vast array of individual duties and roles. Some books were made available for purchase, and others were distributed to troops for their education or entertainment. Still others were kept at unit level- these included the volumes that were printed with specific regulations on various topics. The wartime Wehrmacht books, booklets, pamphlets and leaflets that survive to this day are a rich source of historical information that can inform us about the Second World War.
