Product Description: A nice 48 Star American Flag in overall excellent condition. Each of the individual red and white stripes are directly machine sewn together tightly and are without damage. The separate blue background features 48 individually applied machine sewn white stars. Each star remains affixed firmly to the flag and are also without damage. The end of this 48 Star American Flag is nicely reinforced with heavy cotton and machine stitching. The flag utilizes two heavy galvanized eyelets for hanging on a mast. The flag is marked “Philadelphia Quartermaster”. A very nice 48 star flag that was used by the United States between 1912 and 1959, during both World Wars.
Historical Description: Since the origin of the Stars and Stripes, its creation has become a bit of American folklore. It is widely believed by many that Betsy Ross made the first American flag, however, various towns in colonial America have laid claimed to being the birthplace of the American Flag. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag for the United States of America. The Declaration of Independence made this resolution necessary. Previously, each colony had their own flag, which were flown on American colonial ships. England considered these armed vessels pirate ships and hanged their crews when they were captured. The American flag was designed to represent this new union of the thirteen original states: it would have thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, and thirteen white stars over a blue field. One of the first flags had the stars arranged in a circle, based on the idea that all colonies were equal. The thirteen stripes, resting side by side, represented the struggle for independence; red stood for valor, white signified purity and blue represented loyalty. In 1818, after a few design changes, the United States Congress decided to retain the flag’s original thirteen stripes and add new stars to reflect each new state that entered the union. Since its first inception, Americans have fought for and died to preserve the ideals of democracy represented by the American flag.
