Product Description: A very unusual and rare Düsseldorf City Banner. This Düsseldorf City Banner displays the coat of arms of the city of Düsseldorf, with a red lion wearing a crown, and an anchor and is single sided. This example is produced in twilled cotton, with the design itself being printed construction. This example has a clip sewn below the coat of arms design on the reverse side, likely part of how it was once hung and displayed during the period. It is likely there was other clips on one of the edges, which have been lost to time. Light age throughout, otherwise in very good condition overall. Overall an impressive and interesting Düsseldorf City Banner, which measures 77″ x 91″ (195 x 231 cm).
Historical Description: The concept of a Coat of Arms has long been embedded in European history, with the first designs to represent nobility being started around the 12th century. Germany itself, began to use these emblems to identify each of the many city states prior to the unification of Germany under Wilhelm II, in the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. These coat of arms saw a more limited use under the Kaiser, interested in creating one Germany with less division by previous state lines. The Third Reich began to see a resurgence of these Coat of Arms designs, being utilized as individual emblems of each of the Gau state regions in Nazi Germany. These emblems were heavily promoted to instill strong nationalism and historic pride in the history of Germany among those living under the Third Reich. Many Coat of Arms designs are still utilized by individual cities throughout Germany, giving a glimpse into the long history in mainland Europe.
