Description

Product Description: A very nice Early Luftwaffe Flak Badge in overall excellent condition. This early Luftwaffe Flak Badge is produced of die struck nickel silver, and retains a nice lightly patinaed finish. The lower depth points of the badge itself display a nice darkened age. The hardware is soldered directly to the reverse of the badge, commonly seen on earlier badges due to their superior qualities over later war zinc based badges and clasps. The hardware is the variant flatwire “C” catch, without repairs and original to the clasp. The early Luftwaffe Flak Badge badge is unmarked, but exhibits the traits of being produced by Juncker. This example is consistent with a J3 pattern Juncker. A very nice example of an early Luftwaffe Flak Badge.

Historical Description: The Luftwaffe Flak Badge was instituted on 10th January 1941. The original design, an Eagle clutching a swastika flying above a raised 88mm gun emplacement and surrounded by an oakleaves wreath, is credited to Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus, a famous German architect whose designs were favored by the German OKW and used for many other combat and qualification awards. The criteria for the awarding of the Luftwaffe Flak Badge was based upon a points system. Points were given for the downing of enemy aircraft and the assistance of the downing of aircraft by searchlight or spotting units. After accruing 16 points, the badge would be awarded. Both officers and enlisted personnel were eligible for the award.
