Product Description: This Padded Air Gunner Badge is an exceptional example of a fairly hard to find embroidered cloth Luftwaffe award, that would likely be impossible to upgrade. The badge is neatly machine embroidered in off-white and silver-gray thread. There are multiple shades of thread used to highlight the design of the eagle, giving this badge a finely detailed look. The backing fabric on this unissued award is wool, as is typical, and is in a nice, medium blue Luftwaffe shade. The embroidery is perfect, with no issues, and the wool still retains all of the original fairly coarse surface nap. This badge has been nicely padded to give it a three-dimensional appearance. These padded cloth badges were private purchase items, made in high quality. On the reverse of this Padded Air Gunner Badge, a thin black backing fabric and some neat hand stitching in light gray thread hold the padding material perfectly in place. This badge was never worn, and remains almost factory fresh, with only extremely minimal signs of age and handling. It displays great, and is in outstanding, near mint condition.
Historical Description: The Luftwaffe Radio Operators Badge (Bordfunkerabzeichen) was instituted by the head of the Luftwaffe, Hermann Goering, in 1935. It featured a German eagle clutching two lightning bolts, surrounded by a wreath with the German swastika at the bottom. The badge was awarded to all Luftwaffe radio operators at the conclusion of their training, upon issue of a certificate from a flight school authorizing them to serve as radio operators. In this sense, it was a trade badge of trained radio operators, rather than being an individual award for military achievement, though it could also be issued prior to the conclusion of training by personnel who flew operational missions. With the annexation of Austria, the Luftwaffe Radio Operators Badge was also issued to Austrian radio operators taken into the German armed forces.
