Product Description: This Japanese Netted Army Helmet is a choice piece, with a great look. The exterior of the helmet retains most of the original factory applied green paint, with a mild, uncleaned patina throughout. There is some light rust near the lower edges of the helmet. A Japanese Army star is affixed to the front of the helmet. The star was painted at same time as the helmet, leaving no doubt that it is originally applied. This helmet has a wonderful original period applied net on the exterior, that has been tucked into the lining system inside. The net is complete and undamaged. Inside, this helmet retains the complete original liner system. The nice leather lining pads are in excellent condition and show minimal if any wear, with virtually no age toning. The original drawstring is intact and tied with what looks to be the original factory knot. The cloth chinstrap is intact and very clean. The steel shell is marked with typical markings on the reverse interior skirt. This is a beautiful helmet and an impressive display object. The condition of this Japanese Netted Army Helmet rates as excellent.
Historical Description: The Imperial Japanese military was one of the most formidable fighting forces on Earth. By 1920, the Imperial Japanese Navy was the third largest in the world. Their Army had a rocky start in the second half of the 19th century, but by 1941 had 51 divisions and 1,700,000 soldiers. Japanese military numbers grew during the course of the war, during which these men were sent to areas of operations that spanned a huge part of the globe, including the Mongolian border, Hong Kong, the Phillipines, Thailand, Burma, Dutch East Indies, and Malaya. These soldiers were issued a wide variety of uniform and equipment items. They had specialized footwear, helmets and other headgear, and different types of uniforms intended for the varying (and often extreme) climates in which Japanese soldiers fought. As with all of the major combatants of WWII, the Japanese also had special insignia to identify ranks and roles of individual soldiers, as well as decorations to reward soldiers for their service and achievements. American soldiers who fought in the Pacific Theater avidly sought Japanese items as souvenirs, and they collected not only flags, weapons and helmets, but items of personal equipment and even personal items of Japanese soldiers. Today, all aspects of WWII Japanese Army uniforms, insignia, equipment, and awards, remain collectible historic items.
