Description

Product Description: A very nice Cased SS-FM Stick Pin in overall excellent condition. The SS-FM Stick Pin was given to financial supporters of the SS who contributed to the organization on a monthly basis. This SS-FM Stick Pin is made of silver tombak and black enamel. The obverse side features the black SS runes in the center of a silver mobile swastika, as well as the letters “F M”. One small chip can be seen on the black enamel to the right of the SS runes and between the arms of the swastika, and is almost unnoticeable. The reverse side of the pin is nicely maker marked for the firm of Deschler & Sohn, Munchen. The original wearer’s member number “F 3418” is also stamped on the reverse side. This is a very low number compared to many other examples, which can easily hit higher five digit numbers. Also to note is that the “F” prefix is much rarer to find than any other letter prefix.  The original stick pin is firmly affixed to the reverse side round solder plate, without any repairs or damage. The black box the pin is housed in is likely a jeweler box from around the period.  Was it used by the original owner?….I could not answer that honestly either way. So for sake of argument, the case is a jeweler’s case. The case is covered in a black textured fabric, which has faded over time. The interior lid is nicely lined with a white rayon lining, which has a small tear down the center and mild patina. The lower insert has multiple pin holes in random places, and one larger central recess. The hinge works properly. A very nice mother of pearl push button adorns the front of the case for opening the latch. Overall a very nice SS-FM Stick Pin in a black case.

Historical Description: The origins of the SS began in 1923 as a small detail of men meant to protect Nazi Party meetings during the first years of the party. Under the leadership of Heinrich Himmler, the SS would grow to become one of the most feared, loathed, and yet in some instances, respected organizations in world history. From the early days of the Nazi party to its final moments, the SS were Germany’s foremost security, surveillance, and elite military organization. The SS was comprised of three main elements, the Allgemeine SS (General SS), the Waffen SS (Armed SS), and the SS Totenkopfverbande (SS Deaths Head Units). The Allgemeine SS were primarily responsible for policing, security, the Gestapo, and enforcement of racial policies. The Waffen SS were the organizations paramilitary combat troops who would eventually become the nucleus of Germany’s most elite formations during the Second World War, comprising of many divisions and volunteers from all over Europe. The role of the SS Totenkopfverbande is amongst some of the most notorious of the organization as their responsibility was overseeing and operating the concentration camps and death camps from 1933 to 1945.  Additional subdivisions of the SS also included the Sicherdienst “SD”, and the Geheimestaatspolizei “Gestapo”.  By the end of World War 2, the SS would have grown from a small unit of 8 men, to over 1 million, including volunteers from nearly every European nation serving in their ranks.
