Product Description: This rare Tropical Prussian Naval Officers Cap is a fantastic display object. The exterior of this handsome and very hard to find cap is made of khaki twilled cotton. The front features a full set of high-quality insignia, with a very nice bullion embroidered cockade and metal based Prussian crown with bullion accents. The bullion embroidery is complete and beautiful with pleasant age toning to the metal. The delicate oilcloth chin cord is complete, with no damage or repairs, and the gilt Naval chin cord buttons retain most of the original finish. The woven cap band shows no fading. Inside, the original thin leather sweatband remains intact, though the rear seam has separated and there is some normal flaking to the edges. This cap shows light wear and age only and is very well-preserved. There is minimal patina to the exterior, and only two small holes on the crown with a small area of staining. This tropical Prussian Naval Officers Cap would be extremely hard to upgrade. This seldom encountered hat remains in excellent condition.
Historical Description: The military uniforms of imperial Germany have their roots in 1842, when new standards of dress were introduced that were a break from the traditions of the Napoleonic Wars. It was at this time that the spiked helmet as well as the dark blue Waffenrock were introduced. From this time through the beginning of the 20th century, a vast array of different uniforms, caps and helmets were introduced. Not only the insignia but in many cases the colors of the uniforms themselves varied for different unit types or even specific units, a result of the need to differentiate units to command them on a chaotic field of battle. Details as specific as the style of cuff on the sleeve might indicate the federal state from which a unit originated. Different service branches might wear uniforms of completely different styles. In 1907, the armies began a process of uniform modernization with the introduction of field gray uniforms. The speed of this evolution increased dramatically with the outbreak of war in 1914, and by the end of the German Empire in the defeat of 1918, soldiers were clad in uniforms that had little connection to the elaborate finery of the 19th century.
