Product Description: Extremely rare Rank 10 SA Dagger. This rare early Rank 10 SA Dagger by Ernst Kemper is a desirable piece, as it was crafted by an ultra rare maker. Ernst Kemper is ranked 10/10 on the McSARR list, indicating this is among the rarest makers of these daggers. The blade on this rare Rank 10 SA Dagger retains its bright sheen that is slightly muted by a pleasing gray patina. Visible cross graining with moderate runner marks and scattered areas of spotting and freckling that do not detract from the rarity of this blade that is marked “Ernst Kemper / Solingen”. Early solid nickel fittings exhibit a pleasing patina with a tight pommel nut that was never turned. Guard is district marked “Nrh” for Niederrhein. Nice wood grip with handling wear and light patina throughout. SA emblem and eagle are excellent with patina. Both are tightly inset and are original to the grip. Guard and grip are both carved with “R160”, the meaning of this marking is unknown. This RZM SA Dagger is complete with its original steel scabbard that retains most of it’s anodized finish with patina throughout and light spotting. Like the dagger fittings, the scabbard fittings made of solid nickel with patina that perfectly matches the dagger. Light dings to the chape and a slight dent in the finial. This is a very nice example of a Rank 10 SA dagger by a rare maker that would be an excellent addition to any collection.
Historical Description: The Sturmabteilung, known by the initials “SA,” were the original paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party. This organization was originally formed in 1921 and played a large role in the Nazi ascendancy and rise to power from the 1920s through 1933. The organization had a system of ranks and was divided into units, in a manner similar to that of the military. As with all of the paramilitary organizations during the Third Reich, the SA wore uniforms and had their own distinctive badges, insignia and regalia. At the time of the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, the SA had two million members. Following the Night of the Long Knives in 1934, and the arrest and eventual murder of SA leader Ernst Rohm, the size and influence of the SA decreased, but it continued to exist until the fall of Nazi Germany in May 1945. During WWII, the SA was involved with pre-military training, with the largest training unit, the SA-Marine, serving as an auxiliary to the German Navy. The SA even attempted to field a combat unit, at first as a Regiment, and eventually, an armored Korps- “Panzerkorps Feldherrnhalle.” The vast size of the SA at its height, and the length of time the SA was operational, created a vast range of different items of uniform, equipment, insignia, paperwork, etc., which is very collectible today.
