Product Description: A beautiful Officer’s Damascus Kaiserliche Marine Sword in overall excellent++ condition. This Damascus Kaiserliche Marine Sword was produced by the firm of WKC. The blade was produced in the Damascus “Maiden Hair” pattern. The blade, measuring 30″ in length, remains fully intact with no chips or damage to the edge. No rust spots or fading can be observed on the blade. The early imperial style logo and trademark name of “WKC” is stamped on the reverse ricasso of the blade. The double sided folding basket hilt, with quillion, are produced of brass with remnants of the over 100+ year old gilding still present. The obverse folding basket features the imperial symbol for the Kaiserliche Marine. The “D” guard remains firmly affixed to the mouth of the pommels lion. The pommel lion head is beautifully detailed, and adorned with one red and one green cut glass eyes. Whoever the original owner of this Damascus Kaiserliche Marine Sword was, he liked nice things, as this wire wrapped is made of “bone”, which has a wonderful color contrasting natural veining throughout. Two very small stress cracks can be seen in the grip on each side, the grip is on no danger of further damage. The black leather bodied scabbard features two embossed lines running the length of the scabbard. The reverse side of the leather body shows the joined stitching of the scabbard leather. This stitching is securely intact and without any repairs. The leather body itself remains in fantastic condition with nearly all the finish remaining. The brass drag, center band, and throat body, are all made of brass in the “hammered” style. The scabbard fittings retain fair amounts of the original gilding in the recessed area. The fittings remain undamaged with no dents to be seen. The reverse scabbard fittings staples are also hand hammered to match the detail of the fittings. The hanger rings as well, are hammered examples. Overall a beautiful Damascus Kaiserliche Marine Sword representing the skill and craftsmanship of the Old World. The owner of this example must have been important or had money, for this is not a typically found sword!
Historical Description: The traditional sword was part of the regalia of many of the Third Reich’s military and paramilitary branches, including the Wehrmacht, Polizei, and SS. Wear of the sword was typically limited to dress occasions, and was generally reserved for officers and NCOs. Each soldier or official had to purchase his own sword. These were made by a variety of manufacturers and made available through distributors. Although the overall pattern and appearance of Third Reich swords was regulated by the government or military, there were countless options that the wearer of the sword could choose from, depending on his personal taste, and how much money he wanted to spend. Blades were available with or without etchings. Some swords bore German national symbols on the handle, such as an eagle and swastika on the cross guard or grip, or an organization emblem or swastika on the pommel. Other swords were manufactured without these emblems. Swords could be personalized with engravings or etchings identifying the owner. In wear, they were suspended from a sword hanger worn under the uniform. The wide variety of Third Reich swords, and the generally extremely high level of workmanship used in the traditional craft of sword manufacture, makes these extremely interesting to collect and to study.
