Description

Product Description: This Meybauer U-Boat Badge is a nice example, with strong visual appeal. This textbook wartime badge is made of copper coated Feinzink. The obverse finish is outstanding, with most of the beautiful original gold finish still intact. Some slight, honest wear to high points of the design reveals the dull gray color of the zinc in a few small areas. The badge retains great original detail. The reverse of this badge is flat and smooth, and is unmarked, though this variant is known to have been made by Meybauer. The gold finish on the reverse shows some mottled old toning. The hardware setup is normal for this maker, with a block hinge and wire catch with catch plate. The round wire attachment pin is functional. The intact original finish on the hardware makes it clear that this piece is all-original and unrepaired. There is no damage to note. This U-Boat Badge is choice and remains in excellent condition.

Historical Description: On October 13, 1939, Grossadmiral Erich Raeder of the Kreigsmarine instituted the U-Boat Badge (U-Boots-Kriegsabzeichen) to recognize the combat achievements of the extremely dangerous and all-volunteer U-Boat service. The design of the badge took the same form as the first world war examples featuring a German submarine surrounded by an oakleaf wreath but replaced the imperial crown with the eagle and swastika at the top of the wreath. The design of the badge was at first submitted by the Kriegsmarine sailors themselves and was then refined by Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus. To earn the badge, Uboot sailors had to participate in a minimum of two missions with action against the enemy. If a sailor was wounded on a single mission, he was immediately eligible to receive the U-Boat Badge. The badge was authorized to be worn both on and off duty. During World War 2 a total of 9,536 U-Boat Badges were awarded.
