Product Description: This is a nice, honest example of a Japanese bayonet, that has been well cared for over the years. The full length, 15-3/4 inch steel blade is “in the white,” with no bluing ever applied. The blade remains in nice condition, with only a few scattered areas of graying from age, and no damage. The ricasso is neatly marked with stamped arsenal markings. On the hilt, the guard and pommel are blued steel that shows light age. The wooden grip panels are intact and never messed with, with light wear and no damage. This Japanese bayonet is complete with its original scabbard. The scabbard body is steel, with a brass brazing line along the reverse seam. The scabbard shows slight wear and a mild patina, and is straight, with no dents or damage. The scabbard retains the original leather frog, affixed with an intact buckle and strap. The frog has the original rivets and stitching intact, and shows only minor wear to the leather surface. This is a nice representative example overall. The condition rates as excellent.
Historical Description: The Imperial Japanese military was one of the most formidable fighting forces on Earth. By 1920, the Imperial Japanese Navy was the third largest in the world. Their Army had a rocky start in the second half of the 19th century, but by 1941 had 51 divisions and 1,700,000 soldiers. Japanese military numbers grew during the course of the war, during which these men were sent to areas of operations that spanned a huge part of the globe, including the Mongolian border, Hong Kong, the Phillipines, Thailand, Burma, Dutch East Indies, and Malaya. These soldiers were issued a wide variety of uniform and equipment items. They had specialized footwear, helmets and other headgear, and different types of uniforms intended for the varying (and often extreme) climates in which Japanese soldiers fought. As with all of the major combatants of WWII, the Japanese also had special insignia to identify ranks and roles of individual soldiers, as well as decorations to reward soldiers for their service and achievements. American soldiers who fought in the Pacific Theater avidly sought Japanese items as souvenirs, and they collected not only flags, weapons and helmets, but items of personal equipment and even personal items of Japanese soldiers. Today, all aspects of WWII Japanese Army uniforms, insignia, equipment, and awards, remain collectible historic items.
