Product Description: This is a really nice, apparently unissued example of a Heer Kuban Shield. The shield is made of stamped steel that retains virtually all of its original factory applied bronze finish, with eye-catching golden tones. There is a light surface patina, with bare steel exposed in some very small areas. All of the original detail remains intact. The shield is complete with its original backing. The wool is the typical field gray color used by the Heer, and is virtually factory fresh, with all of the original surface nap. On the reverse, this Heer Kuban Shield retains all of the original tan backing paper, which completely covers the backing plate and fabric. There are no stitch holes or any other indication this shield was ever worn on a uniform. This shield displays very well. The condition borders on near mint.
Historical Description: The Kuban Shield (Ärmelschild Kuban) was instituted by Adolf Hitler on September 20, 1943. It was a campaign shield, awarded to German troops who participated in the battles of the Kuban bridgeheads, between February and October 1943. To earn this shield, one had to participate in a major battle, be wounded, or have at least 60 days of uninterrupted service in the campaign, either on land, in the air, or on the water. There were 12 separate battles that counted as major battles for the purposes of awarding this shield. The shield was made of stamped metal, with a bronze wash, and featured a stylized map of the Kuban region, with the names of the bridgeheads: Krymskaja, Lagunen, and Noworossijsk. The shields were issued on a wool backing cloth, in a color suited to the uniform of the recipient’s service branch.
