Product Description: This is a very nice German “Schutzpolizei” Police tunic and trousers set. The exterior of this attractive tunic is constructed of fine prewar quality wool that shows no damage. The wool is feldgrau, with the typical bluish color shade typical for Polizei uniforms. The tunic remains very clean and shows only minimal traces of age and wear. The neck of this tunic has an eye-catching green piped rich brown collar, with green backed flat wire Litzen. The Litzen are correctly piped in twisted silver cord and are factory machine sewn with straight stitching. Some light wear to the surface nap on the upper collar edge shows that this uniform was worn. The green piped slip-on style shoulder boards are for the rank of “Wachtmeister.” All 8 of the unpainted aluminum closure buttons are intact and originally sewn, as are all four of the pocket buttons. The sleeves end in rich brown cuffs with green wool piping. There is a high quality and virtually pristine green police sleeve eagle, with the distinctive Polizei eagle and swastika emblem. This is originally affixed to the sleeve with hand stitching. Inside, this appealing tunic is lined with cotton twill fabric, which remains clean. There are factory type size and maker stamps visible on the interior button side, with a 1939 date. The sleeves are lined with rayon fabric. This Police tunic is complete with original trousers, in a nicely matching wool. The pants have no damage, just a few very small areas of discoloration, that are almost not noticeable. The pants feature green wool piping on the outer seams and a typical lining with factory type size stamps that are mostly illegible. Overall, this uniform is a very impressive matched set for a full mannequin display.
Historical Description: The German Polizei (Police) had very many different roles before and during WWII. There were many different Police organizations that worked together for the purposes of law enforcement and maintaining order. The Ordnungspolizei was the regular police. Under the Ordnungspolizei umbrella were the various Schutzpolizei (protection police) units, including state, municipal, rural, and traffic police. There was also the Water Protection Police and the Fire Protection Police. Within the Ordnungspolizei jurisdiction was the Hilfspolizei, a category which included volunteer fire departments, Air Raid Protection Police, postal protection, and Factory Protection Police, among other groups. Police batallions of the Ordnungspolizei deployed to occupied territories during WWII, where their duties included the roundup and elimination of Jews and other civilian groups the Nazis regarded as undesirable. Besides the Ordnungspolizei, there was also the Sicherheitspolizei, made up of the combined forces of the criminal police and the Gestapo secret police. Under police jurisdiction was the Sicherheitsdienst, the intelligence service of the Nazi party and SS. Starting in 1943, all German police forces were placed under the command of SS leader Heinrich Himmler. The various Polizei organizations all had distinctive uniforms and insignia which indicated rank, organizational assignment, and occupational assignment. Headgear of Polizei units ranged from the mostly ornamental “Tschako” helmets of civilian police forces, to field caps and combat helmets. As with all Third Reich uniformed organizations, the Polizei had their own ID documents and awards, as well.
