Product Description: This First Pattern Gravity Knife is a very appealing example that appears to have been issued during the war. The steel blade shows some traces of use, with a few scattered marks. The edge has been lightly sharpened, most likely period done. The sharpened edge shows age, and light patina, that matches the rest of the blade. The blade is etched with the maker emblem of Paul Weyersberg in Solingen, a desirable and less often seen maker. The handle on this First Pattern Gravity Knife is very attractive, with only a slight old patina. The grip panels show attractive light brown tones and are completely intact. The spring and flip lever are also intact and sound, with no damage or repairs. The knot spike has the expected Luftwaffe acceptance stamp at the base. The numbers on the lever and spring match, and there is no indication this knife has ever been disassembled. The bale for the lanyard is functional. This nice and hard to find Weyersberg example is complete and has a great look. The condition rates as excellent.
Historical Description: The “Flieger-Kappmesser” (Flyer’s Jackknife) was introduced by the German Luftwaffe in 1937. Although this knife has become indelibly linked with German paratroopers, it was in fact intended for issue to all Luftwaffe air crew. This iconic WWII German knife had a distinctive look, with wooden grips and a four inch, gravity propelled, locking blade, as well as a spike which could be used to pick apart knots. The trousers issued to members of Fallschirmjäger units were outfitted with a special pocket intended for carrying this important tool, which in the reality of war, could also be used as a fighting weapon. In 1943, a second, “takedown” form of this knife appeared, with features which allowed for the easy disassembly of the knife for cleaning and maintenance. Both types of this Luftwaffe Gravity Knife (as these are known to collectors) were produced by multiple factories, and exist in multiple variations, making them appealing to collectors. They are desirable items that are sought-after today.
