Product Description: This DLV Flyers Knife is a high quality, early piece. It was produced by the firm of Carl Eickhorn, a maker known for quality pieces. The steel blade shows some wear, and traces of having been cleaned at some point, but is not too bad. Some traces of the original cross graining can be seen near the crossguard. The maker mark is very faded from the cleaning but is still legible. The handle on this dagger is nice, with a textbook early nickel plated guard and pommel cap, showing handsome toning. The swastika emblems retain full original enamel. The leather-wrapped grip is gorgeous and without damage. The leather retains strong original color and virtually all of the original surface. This Eickhorn DLV Flyers Knife is complete with its original leather wrapped scabbard, which has no damage to note. The leather is beautiful. The nickel plated drag and throat body have a light surface patina, with appealing pastel toning that matches the dagger fittings perfectly. The throat body is unmarked. The suspension ring is present, but the leather hanger is missing. This Eickhorn DLV Flyers Knife displays great. The condition is excellent.
Historical Description: The Deutscher Luftsportverband (DLV) was an organization created by the NSDAP in March 1933. The “Sport” in the name helped to conceal the fact that the DLV were not really a sport organization, but rather was made up of units that conducted military flight training- specifically, the training of military pilots, contravening the Treaty of Versailles stipulation that Germany was not to have any air force. The head of the DLV was Hermann Göring, and Ernst Röhm was the deputy chief. The organization was formed from a number of pre-existing flight clubs. The various SA “Fliegersturm” units were disbanded, and their personnel rolled into the DLV, with an increased focus on military style flight training rather than air sports. The DLV was a uniformed organization, and wore uniforms similar to that of the SA, but with distinctive insignia and rank structure. In 1937, the DLV was disbanded; the successor organization was the Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps (NSFK).
