Product Description: We are pleased to be able to offer the personal Car Pennant of DAF Leader Dr. Robert Ley. The car pennant was used as a means of identification during the Third Reich for swift and accurate identification of a vehicle to whom it contained, or belonged to. The car pennants used by the leaders of the Third Reich were all uniquely distinct with their own personal designs, so as not to be confused with subordinate figures. Being the DAF Leader, the Robert Ley Car Pennant comprised of the much recognized DAF cogwheel with central mobile swastika over a field of red, with crossed black and white stripes. The red base material consists of a finely woven stiff rayon, which has minimal patina throughout. The borders of the pennant are trimmed with black and white rayon bands, with a weave similar to that of Third Reich award ribbons. The central DAF cogwheel is constructed of expertly executed chain-stitching. The central swastika is made similar to that of the borders, closely resembling that of award ribbons. The center of the swastika is reinforced with a black cross over the center. Both attachment clips are intact, with most of their original nickel plating remaining. One of the attachment clips is nicely RZM marked “M3/45”. The pennant remains in overall very nice condition, with minimal patina. However, there are a few small holes on each side of the pennant which the photos show entirely. This is an extremely rare opportunity to own the unique insignia of the leader of one of the Third Reich’s most recognized organizations, DAF Leader Robert Ley Car Pennant.
Historical Description: During the Third Reich and WWII, a wide variety of flags and pennants were used on German cars and vehicles. In the military, vehicle flags and pennants were used to indicate branch or rank, or specific command roles. The various civilian organizations also had vehicle flags and pennants for members of their organization or to denote the vehicles of officers, leaders or people in specific roles. Even political leaders had their own flags which were often rank specific. Some of the flags, especially military ones, were simply printed, and some were machine woven or stitched, while the flags for political leaders and the highest ranking military personnel were more decorative and often elaborately hand embroidered in bullion wire. Some vehicle flags were mass produced, including simple national flag type swastika emblem pennants that could have been bought by any patriotic supporter. Others were unique. These flags were attractive souvenirs for GI troops at the end of the war, and are eagerly collected today.
