Product Description: This Crusher Style Heer Officer Cap is an absolutely stunning, top shelf piece. The exterior of this gorgeous cap is made of a high quality light gray-green wool with a fine nap. The wool retains nearly all of the original surface with light wear and minimal moth grazing to the nap. The front of the cap features a Heer officer cap eagle that has been directly embroidered to the front of the cap- something rarely seen on officer visors, as this type of construction was very time-consuming and required very skilled workers. The eagle is done in silver bullion that has been accented with gray thread that matches the exterior of the cap, an impressive detail. It goes without saying that this officer had some money to spend on his uniform! The dark green cap band and red wool Artillery piping contrast nicely with the light field gray color. The officer chin cord and “crusher” style leather visor are intact with no issues. The overall shape of the cap is very attractive and is what could be called “saddle form.” Inside, this lovely cap has a rayon lining. The celluloid sweatshield is maker marked, indicating that this cap was made by “Uniform-Mützen-Fabrikation Otto Nolte” (formerly M. Nolte) in Freiburg im Breisgau. The thin leather sweat band has some minor damage from wear in the forehead area. This fantastic Crusher Style Heer Officer Cap appears lightly worn and has no repairs. This is a beautiful and very rare visor that could be a collection highlight.
Historical Description: The visor cap (Schirmmütze) was an important part of the headgear worn by German uniformed military, civil, paramilitary and political organizations during the Third Reich. This was the standard cloth headgear worn as a part of the service uniform. Visor caps were worn outdoors, as well as indoors, and were often required to be worn by all personnel on duty. Visor caps were made in versions specific to each organization and were often further differentiated through the use of insignia, colored piping, or style of chin cord, to indicate rank, role or branch. The insignia used on these caps ranged from simple stamped metal emblems, to elaborate hand embroidery. Visor caps were issued to enlisted soldiers and NCOs in the military and in some other organizations. Officers had to purchase their own hats, and lower ranks could choose to purchase caps that were of a higher quality than the rather basic, issue examples. The private purchase caps were generally made in very high quality, with fine materials. A wide variety of fabrics were used, from Trikot and doeskin, to heavy wool, or even lightweight white fabric for summer wear. In the military, issue of these caps was generally suspended shortly after the outbreak of the war, but they continued to be worn by some troops until the end of the war.
