Product Description: This Condor Legion Panzer Badge is a beautiful example of a rare and seldomly offered award. This one was post war produced. It’s made of stamped brass, with a high quality electroplated silver finish. The original silvering is mostly intact, with mellow, pleasant toning. Light wear to the high points exposes the golden color of the brass. All of the original detail is intact. The reverse of this badge is hollow, and is unmarked, though this variant is known to have been manufactured by the firm of Rudolf Souval, in Vienna. The round wire attachment pin is functional. The hinge and catch have been neatly repaired with solder. This badge has good character and eye appeal, showing even age and wear; it’s a nice-looking piece. Historical Description: The Condor Legion Panzer Badge (Panzertruppenabzeichen der Legion Condor) was a badge for German armored personnel sent to Spain as part of the German training and assistance forces that participated in the Spanish Civil War. It was instituted in the fall of 1936 and was awarded by Oberstleutnant Wilhelm von Thoma, the leader of the Panzer units in the Legion Condor. The soldiers who received this badge were crews of German armored vehicles as well as anti-tank crews who had served in the combat zone for at least three months and who had distinguished themselves during that time. The soldiers awarded this badge in Spain were formally recognized by a decree of the German Army supreme command in 1939, which recognized this badge as an official award of the German state. A total of 415 awards of this badge were made. They were produced in Spain, as well as by a number of German manufacturers. This is a historically important badge that was awarded in low numbers.
