Description

Product Description: This Heer Rabbit Fur Cap is a very appealing example. This is a German made and issued example of the Soviet style “Ushanka” field cap, intended for wear by German Army soldiers operating in cold areas of the occupied USSR. It is made of typical wartime field gray wool, with turn-down front and side flaps of rabbit fur. The front flap of this attractive winter cap is adorned with a wartime type zinc Heer visor cap eagle, which is common to see on these. These were not issued with cockades. The eagle has nice original finish and is nicely nestled into the rabbit fur, which is an attractive tan shade. The side flaps are joined at the top with rayon ties. Inside, this Heer Rabbit Fur Cap has a typical quilted lining made of artificial silk (rayon). The maker and size markings are not legible. This cap is complete and sound, with no mothing or other damage to the wool, and no bald spots to the rabbit skin. It shows light wear and remains in excellent condition.

Historical Description: The German Armed Forces entered WWII with clothing and equipment suited for the mild winters of Germany. After entering the territory of the Soviet Union in 1941 and failing to secure victory in the first weeks of the campaign, German soldiers found themselves faced with winter conditions much harsher than anything found at home- conditions for which the normal wool uniform was totally unsuitable. War planners hastily introduced a vast array of cold weather garments including knit items and articles made of sheepskin or animal fur. These were mostly stopgap emergency measures, augmented by civilian items donated on the home front. By the second winter of the war in the East, a new padded suit was introduced for combat troops to allow them to fight in brutally cold temperatures. Support troops and sentries continued to be issued with other types of winter gear appropriate for their roles. Among the millions of troops sent to the occupied East, a vast and diverse array of winter uniforms and gear were utilized.
