Product Description: We are pleased to be able to offer another exquisite dagger, an extremely rare Early 1936 Chained SA High Leader Dagger produced by the firm of Carl Eickhorn. The blade is produced of a hand-forged Damascus steel in the “Maiden Hair” pattern. This pattern features a very prominent grain pattern and a slightly dark finish. The obverse of the blade of this Chained SA High Leader Dagger retains approximately 75% of the gilded raised motto which reads “Alles Für Deutschland”, and is flanked by oak leaf and acorn sprigs. The reverse side maker mark is the raised small early double oval maker mark logo of “Carl Eickhorn Solingen”. The blade is nicely fitted to the lower cross-guard. The upper and lower silver honor cross-guards are hand enhanced with oak leaf and acorn motifs, both of which retain most of their original antique silver finish. The brown walnut grip is a medium contour ridge constructed type, fitting the cross-guards very nicely. The SA roundel and silver party eagle are both expertly set into the wooden grip. The scabbard shell is completely straight and is covered with the fine-grained brown leather. The leather runs up to, but not under, the upper and lower fittings. As with most of these Honor Daggers, the original leather was applied using an animal based glue, which broke down with age and separated from the steel scabbard. Therefore, the vast majority out there have been releathered. All of the fittings are in fine condition, and with beautiful patina. The lower ball retains a beautiful round shape. These scabbard fittings are retained by early silvered screws. The center scabbard ramp is firmly intact and shows no signs of tampering. The chain is the typical early style SA High Leader type, featuring silvered swastika links. The links of this early example are unmarked on the back. The chain’s belt clip was also silvered, and features the SA motto. A truly rare Early Pattern 1936 Chained SA High Leader Dagger in very nice condition.
Historical Description: The Sturmabteilung, known by the initials “SA,” were the original paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party. This organization was originally formed in 1921 and played a large role in the Nazi ascendancy and rise to power from the 1920s through 1933. The organization had a system of ranks and was divided into units, in a manner similar to that of the military. As with all of the paramilitary organizations during the Third Reich, the SA wore uniforms and had their own distinctive badges, insignia and regalia. At the time of the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, the SA had two million members. Following the Night of the Long Knives in 1934, and the arrest and eventual murder of SA leader Ernst Rohm, the size and influence of the SA decreased, but it continued to exist until the fall of Nazi Germany in May 1945. During WWII, the SA was involved with pre-military training, with the largest training unit, the SA-Marine, serving as an auxiliary to the German Navy. The SA even attempted to field a combat unit, at first as a Regiment, and eventually, an armored Korps- “Panzerkorps Feldherrnhalle.” The vast size of the SA at its height, and the length of time the SA was operational, created a vast range of different items of uniform, equipment, insignia, paperwork, etc., which is very collectible today.
