Product Description: This Reichs Chancellory Serving Plate is a large, impressive and extremely desirable piece of serving ware. It measures a substantial 16 inches in diameter. This pattern of tableware was produced by Wellner and was used in the Reichs Chancellory (Reichskanzlei), the office of the German Chancellor, Adolf Hitler. It bears the typical, high quality, engraved monogram used for this silver service, with the initials “RK” (for Reichskanzlei) engraved on either side of a bent winged Nazi eagle and swastika emblem. This engraving is textbook and perfectly preserved with all original detail visible. The surface of this attractive silver plate shows original shine as well as typical age toning. The mild patina has some light pastel color shades. On the reverse, this Reichs Chancellory Serving Plate has typical and correct markings including the stamped number “156495.” These Reichs Chancellory serving items were never produced in huge numbers and most did not survive. This is a rare item from Hitler’s official government office, that remains in excellent condition.
Historical Description: Silversmithing was one of the arts that flourished in Germany before and during the Third Reich. Not only decorative but also functional works were produced by a number of German firms including Wellner and Bruckmann & Söhne. It was typical for distinctive sets of cutlery, servingware and other tableware to be produced for important leaders and government offices. In some cases these items were specific patterns crafted solely for one individual, while others were generic types personalized with monograms, family crests or organizational emblems. Silver tableware was used anywhere where meals were presented, including homes, government buildings, and the trains of government and military leaders; in some cases formal and informal patterns were produced. Beyond tableware, German silversmiths also produced decorative items of all kinds, from presentation photo frames to vases. Cigar boxes, ash trays and other smoking items were also crafted by German silversmiths of the era. Many Third Reich silver objects, including many items connected to personalities of that era, have survived to this day, having been taken as souvenirs at the end of the war.
