Product Description: This 8 Year SS Long Service Award is a great example of this desirable award. This one is the variant known to collectors as a Type 1 Petz & Lorenz made version. It’s a high-quality medal, made of a brass alloy, Tombak. The medal itself is in near mint condition, with virtually all of the beautiful original factory applied bronze finish. The finish remains almost factory fresh, with light golden highlights contrasting with darker tones in the recesses. The surfaces are clean, with some scattered tiny areas of age patina. The loop at the top of the medal has a textbook shape and retains the correct original teardrop suspension loop. This 8 Year SS Long Service Award is complete with a length of typical cornflower blue ribbon. The ribbon is undamaged, with minimal age toning. This is a fine, all-original award, free of damage or repairs, that would be tough to upgrade. The overall condition rates as excellent/near mint.
Historical Description: Prior to WWII, the German military and civil authorities instituted a wide range of Long Service Awards to reward personnel for years of service. These awards were used by all branches of the German military, as well as civil and political organizations such as the police, the customs service, and the National Labor Service (RAD). There was also a general Long Service Award for civil service. Each of these awards was issued in the form of a medal that was suspended from a blue ribbon. Many of these were made in different grades denoting a specific number of years of service. They were worn on the uniform in the form of ribbon or medal bars, and up to two long service awards could be worn at the same time. In many cases, a device affixed to the ribbon bar would denote for which service the award had been issued; sometimes the medals themselves had devices on the ribbons, either in the form of pinned-on metal emblems or embroidered directly to the ribbon. Some German Long Service Awards were very widely awarded, others were made and issued only in small numbers. Third Reich Military Branches and Organizations with versions of Long Service Awards include: Heer, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, SS, RAD, Police, Police, Customs, General Service, etc.
